Scientist-Electrochemist

Location: East Lansing, MI

 

Overview

Fraunhofer USA, Inc., located on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, is seeking a highly motivated, reliable and technically competent individual to join our team as a Scientist. Participating as a staff scientist you will play an integral part advancing our novel carbon-based electrode materials for a broad variety of applications including health, energy and environmental. Our current program covers topics such as diamond micro-fibers for neurotransmitter detection, carbon-based electrodes for CO2 reduction and conductive diamond electrodes for water treatment applications. Additionally, we interact with and supply a wide variety of advanced carbon electrodes to academia and industry.

This is a salaried position offering benefits including health and dental insurance, paid vacation, life insurance and pension plan.

The business core hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with an average working week of 40 hours.

 

Responsibilities

Be a strategic visionary leading a highly respected institute to success and implementing strategies to grow and advance applications of carbon-based electrode materials including boron-doped diamond and (doped) tetrahedral amorphous carbon.

Project acquisition and governmental proposal writing and project management of ongoing projects.

Interact and build meaningful relationships with a variety of research groups from academia and industry.

Lab and pilot scale execution of commercialization / process / technology development activities.

Manuscript writing for peer-reviewed publications.

Supervision of undergraduate and graduate students and interns.

Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program (ISO9001) requirements. 

Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in electrochemistry or analytical electrochemistry or a related field with a strong background in electrochemistry including CV, SWV, DPV, FSCV and EIS.

Demonstrated experience managing proposal and business development efforts to successfully win new contracts, grants, and other funding

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Excellent ability to independently identify, develop and implement scientific solutions to practical problems.

Motivated self-starter with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

Able to work independently, collaboratively and effectively across different functions.

Able to set priorities and adapt to changing needs as well as the proven ability to function well in a fast-paced environment.

Establish and maintain a safe laboratory environment and work practices.

Able to work in an interdisciplinary, diverse and international team.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in analytical chemistry utilizing and characterizing carbon-based electrodes.

Experience with analytical tools such as UV/Vis, FTIR, Raman, XPS, XRD, SEM, SECM and spectroelectrochemistry.

Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications.

Experience with intellectual property management.

Experience in proposal writing.

Experience in scaling and commercializing technology.

CVD Lab Technician

Location: East Lansing, MI

 

Overview

Fraunhofer USA, Inc. located on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, is seeking a highly motivated, reliable and technically competent individual to join our engineering team as a Lab Technician. We offer an exciting work environment in an interdisciplinary team where every individual matters greatly to the success of the company. This is a salaried position offering benefits including health and dental insurance, paid vacation, life insurance and pension plan. The business core hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with an average working week of 40 hours. Training will be provided; however, this position will require someone with the ability to absorb and understand technical skills, with preference given to candidates that can demonstrate this ability through experience or education.

 

Responsibilities

Support our engineering team in areas related to diamond fabrication including sample preparation, laser cutting, polishing and the use of analytical equipment to characterize process results.

Meticulous record keeping of process successes and failures in order to drive results-based process development

Maintenance and conditioning of fabrication systems and other laboratory equipment.

 

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in material science, physical sciences, engineering, or related field and/or equivalent experience

Preference will be given to those with prior laboratory experience in a research setting

Candidate must be detailed orientated and have strong organizational skills

Must be motivated to communicate and coordinate with a diverse and international team.

Ability to make independent decisions

Maintain a safe laboratory environment and work practices.

Technical and working knowledge of polishing and lapping equipment is strongly desired.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) is required.  Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks or AutoCAD) is desired.
