Project Engineer

Location: East Lansing, MI

 

Overview

Fraunhofer USA, Inc. , located on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, is seeking a highly motivated, reliable and technically competent individual to join our engineering team as a Project Engineer with the Systems Group.  The Systems Group designs, builds,  maintains and upgrades existing systems for research projects.  The group specializes in mechanical, electrical and software design.

This is a salaried position offering benefits including health and dental insurance, paid vacation, life insurance and pension plan. 

The business core hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with an average working week of 40 hours. 

Fraunhofer CCD offers a wide spectrum of training in the specifics of diamond synthesis, coatings, 3D printing, and professional research system design and assembly.

 

Responsibilities

  • Executing engineering projects of systems and machine upgrades 
  • Planning machine maintenance and upgrades
  • Managing students and interns within the Systems Group
  • Developing customer and supplier relations for Systems Group projects
  • Adhering to all ISO9001 and ISO13485 processes 
  • Developing and maintaining schematics for gas lines, pneumatics, cooling circuits, vacuum setups, and electronics 
  • 2D and 3D design of system components
  • Technical purchasing
  • Prioritizing and managing work orders from other groups within the Center
  • Other duties as assigned by the Systems Group Manager

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering or similar preferred. Related experience considered
  • Familiarity with CAD and 3D design programs
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of machining and assembly
  • Ability to work independently to solve unique problem sets
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse team of scientists and engineers
  • Candidates should be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously 
  • Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally (5%)

Scientist-Electrochemist

Location: East Lansing, MI

 

Overview

Fraunhofer USA, Inc., located on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, is seeking a highly motivated, reliable and technically competent individual to join our team as a Scientist. Participating as a staff scientist you will play an integral part advancing our novel carbon-based electrode materials for a broad variety of applications including health, energy and environmental. Our current program covers topics such as diamond micro-fibers for neurotransmitter detection, carbon-based electrodes for CO2 reduction and conductive diamond electrodes for water treatment applications. Additionally, we interact with and supply a wide variety of advanced carbon electrodes to academia and industry.

Responsibilities

Be a strategic visionary leading a highly respected institute to success and implementing strategies to grow and advance applications of carbon-based electrode materials including boron-doped diamond and (doped) tetrahedral amorphous carbon.

Project acquisition and governmental proposal writing and project management of ongoing projects.

Interact and build meaningful relationships with a variety of research groups from academia and industry.

Lab and pilot scale execution of commercialization / process / technology development activities.

Manuscript writing for peer-reviewed publications.

Supervision of undergraduate and graduate students and interns.

Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program (ISO9001) requirements. 

Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in electrochemistry or analytical electrochemistry or a related field with a strong background in electrochemistry including CV, SWV, DPV, FSCV and EIS.

Demonstrated experience managing proposal and business development efforts to successfully win new contracts, grants, and other funding

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Excellent ability to independently identify, develop and implement scientific solutions to practical problems.

Motivated self-starter with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

Able to work independently, collaboratively and effectively across different functions.

Able to set priorities and adapt to changing needs as well as the proven ability to function well in a fast-paced environment.

Establish and maintain a safe laboratory environment and work practices.

Able to work in an interdisciplinary, diverse and international team.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in analytical chemistry utilizing and characterizing carbon-based electrodes.

Experience with analytical tools such as UV/Vis, FTIR, Raman, XPS, XRD, SEM, SECM and spectroelectrochemistry.

Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications.

Experience with intellectual property management.

Experience in proposal writing.

Experience in scaling and commercializing technology.
